Shakespeare at the Symphony

Jon de Leon

Chris returns to Prokofiev and debuts with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra for a program of music based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Peoria music director George Stelluto conducts “Star-Crossed Love,” featuring Tchaikovsky, Berlioz and Prokofiev’s takes on the doomed lovers’ story.

Prokofiev’s ballet suite will be interspersed with Shakespearean text, performed by Bradley University theater students with Chris guesting as Friar Laurence as well as the Chorus. Susan Felder, who helmed the Montana Shakespeare in the Parks production of Macbeth with Chris in the title role, directs.

The cast also features Kiayla Jackson as Juliet, Jeffrey Manus as Romeo, Aris-Allen Roberson as Tybalt, Aidan Barker as Mercutio and Jake Hayes as Benvolio.

This is Chris’s second encounter with the Prokofiev after playing third horn on the piece with the 1993 TMEA All-State Philharmonic Orchestra.

The concert will be at the Peoria Civic Center on Oct. 18 at 8pm.
